Petunia Hanging Basket

I have wanted a hanging basket for years and I finally have a place to put one! I did not want to buy one already fixed the fun is in making it your own. Plus I wanted to be able to see the growth over the summer months.  So I started with a small basket already lined for only a few dollars.  I picked out my flowers after that.  I decided on one that has just started blooming and was a little smaller so the growth would look more dramatic over the coming weeks.  Plus gardening with a little one that likes to see changes, I thought this was best for us.

I grabbed some potting soil and headed for the check out.  It happened to be another cloudy day so my picture is not the best and the weather has not cleared up much since then.  The flowers look a little blue here, but are in fact a very deep purple petunia.

I came home and got everything set up for the little monster to play in dirt.  No gloves needed here.  We like to get messy.  He filled the basket half way for me since dirt is his friend.  I took out the small petunia, spread out the bottom roots a little, then had him push the dirt around a little.  Last we topped off the basket with potting soil.  He had to move the soil around a little more just because it feels funny and then again after we watered the thing.

His hands were black, so he figured he had worked really hard and did a great job.  The next part I would not recommend, but hey we did because we can.  I put the basket on a waste high table, put my kid there too.  I let him climb on my shoulders so he could hang it himself.  It was painful but amusing.  He loved it.  My boobs did not after all the kicking.

I am thinking that next time I will buy some cute little hooks and drill them into the wall.  Who doesn't love to use a power tool anyway?  I think I need one more basket so that is the plan for this weekend.

  1. Your basket is so sweet! And I loved the story about having your son hang the basket himself (with your help!). I do think that gardening helps children learn so much, and adds to their confidence. Have fun with the power tools!

    1. Thank you! He loves to be outside and will do anything to "help". We can not wait for it grow. I have already harvested a few seeds from the plant for next spring!

    1. Thank you. I would love a new camera to take a few as the basket fills out. Maybe that and the cloudy day were my problems.
